MY CAREER

Training
&
Experience

IN A FEW LINES

Dimitrios lives in Athens and is a professional Actor, a Cultural Manager, an Occupational Therapist (assistant), an independent researcher on ancient Greek tragedy and a University Student of Greek Civilization Studies (Humanities). Since 2017, Dimitrios, has been investigating the therapeutic aspects of ancient Greek tragedy. Moreover, he has been extensively involved in the writing of plays and poems.

RESEARCH ON ANCIENT GREEK DRAMA

Since 2004, Dimitrios has been researching on the Ancient Greek Tragedy at the "Desmi", Centre for Ancient Greek Drama Research and Practical Applications as well as at the McF (Michael Cacoyannis Foundation) specializing in the study and promotion of ancient Greek Drama and Comedy. As an artist he collaborated with major cultural organizations of his country such as: The National Theater of Greece, Athens Festival, Epidaurus Festival, European Cultural Center of Delphi, Athens Concert Hall, etc. Furthermore, he has participated in international productions as a performer (UK, Hungary, Turkey, Germany and USA). His repertoire includes works by: Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Joanna Murray-Smith, etc.

STAGE DIRECTIONS

As a director, he has also undertaken two projects funded by the European Commission entitled the first "The Messenger" based on the Persians of Aeschylus and the second "Oedipus Idol Reflections onto Jocasta's Golden Pins" based on Sophocles' Oedipus the Tyrant. This material was then used by Professor Mary Yossi, of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, for a series of public lectures entitled "Human Rights and Greek Tragedy" given at leading US universities. In recent years, he delivers workshops dealing with ancient Greek tragedies and its practical applications.

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY & ANCIENT GREEK DRAMA

Ιn addition and in parallel with his theatrical experience, Dimitrios recently acquired a diploma in Occupational Therapy. During the theoretical training, Dimitrios, placed in structures that specialize in the education of minors, adolescents and adults with special skills. Also, in his (960 hour) internship position at the Greek National Institution for the Rehabilitation of the Handicapped, he received deep knowledge and practical skills in motor, functional and cognitive rehabilitation in individuals with acquired neurological disorders. During his stay at the Department of Occupational Therapy he explored the influence of certain ancient drama techniques on the rehabilitation of patients with neurological issues with remarkable results. Besides, this was the trigger for further investigation and deepening of the therapeutic potentials that derive from ancient Greek tragedies.

ROBERT BOSCH STIFTUNG FELLOWSHIP

Thus, in 2019, Dimitrios applied and won a significant scholarship in Germany from the Robert Bosch Stiftung Institution where he trained as Cultural Manager. His awarded project "The Theater of Healing" explores the therapeutic dynamics of Ancient Greek Tragedies and Greek rhythm and is addressed to people suffering from stress and anxiety disorders. The goal of this effort is to develop a new, alternative, fun, and gentle theatrical-centered, therapeutic approach / method that will help people with generalized anxiety disorders reduce their symptoms, improve their functionality and regain control in their lives.

In addition during his stay in Germany he came in direct contact with major Socio-cultural Institutes, gaining important skills and knowledge in creation of artistic projects that have a direct social impact on local communities.

Why Chorus?

Ancient Greek Drama Chorus in my work explores the individual and collective trauma, collective pain, collective anger, collective unconscious, moral dilemmas, phobias, existential impasses, loneliness and despair of modern man. Chorus, through the function of the ancient Greek rhythm,  explores the healing powers that derive from the collective unconscious.

According to Jung the Collective Unconscious is "The region of the soul which is infinitely older than the personal life of the individual". In other words, it is a mental area of our unconscious side that is common to all people and contains ancient memories and experiences.

Chorus

A collective Soul

Chorus is more than Μe, even more than Υou... Chorus is Us! In fact, Chorus reflects our common Soul. When people unite, they breathe with one common heart. Then, Trauma loses its power and the human pain becomes more bearable.

CHORUS  - A COLLECTIVE SOUL

During his stay in Germany, Dimitrios handed over a workshop of ancient Greek drama entitled "Chorus: A Collective Soul". A theoretical and practical approach that examined the concept of collectivity from the point of view of Dance and Space, the Collective Body and the Collective Voice. In addition, Chorus ''A Collective Soul'', was an interactive study on exploring the therapeutic dynamics of Ancient Greek Drama. The workshop was intended for professionals / non-professionals, therapists and generally those who wanted to explore the potential of their body and mind through a fresh theatrical approach.

MESSENGER'S MONOLOGUE

An exhausted messenger arrives offering a dramatic description of the Salamina's Battle and its brutal outcome...

The Artist will try to reproduce the feeling of defeat using the messenger's monologue as a vehicle back in time in order to revive the battlefield of Salamis, while he will try to create a bridge between the past and present. His aesthetic reference will be a big scale glass and iron sculpture named Dromeas ("Runner") created in 1994 by the famous Athenian artist Costas Varotsos.

OEDIPUS IDOL REFLECTION ONTO JOCASTA'S GOLDEN MIRROR PINS

Oedipus, a blessed King with the gift of insight vision. The only man who succeed to unlock the unsolved Sphinx's riddle. After killing his true father the prophecy is thus fulfilled and everything will be tyrannically revealed. Before the final end, Oedipus removes the long golden pins that held Jocasta's dress and plunging them into his own eyes in despair.

The Artist will try to reproduce Oedipus final sorrowful monologue but by making a radical inversion of the plot .He will use the Fourth Chorus Stasimon (1186-1222) in his effort to intrude Oedipus unconscious mind where the pure Truth resides in and makes an apocalypse for the humanity. His aesthetic reference will be the moment when the face of King Oedipus reflects onto the golden Jocasta's pins just seconds before he violently plunges them into his eyes... Thus the plot will be projected one step behind.

GREEKTOPIA

Greektopia begins with the accidental appearance of a contemporary art space, disrupting the reality of three strange creatures. The space’s arrival disrupts the creatures’ routine, while the existence of the creatures themselves, remains a mystery to the gallery’s visitors. Their uncanny presence in an art space raises questions on contemporary art practice and the “power of the image” in today's context. The main goal of Greektopia is the attempt to bring together two dissimilar worlds and enact the monologue that develops between them.

  • Στον τομέα του Κινηματογράφου έχει συμμετάσχει σε ταινίες των: Νίκου Περάκη (ArTherapy), Alessandro Spiliotopoulos (Under the Acropolis), Σύλλας Τζουμέρκας (A Blast), ενώ τα τελευταία χρόνια έχει δανείσει τη φωνή του σε σποτάκια της ΕΡΤ και στο ραδιόφωνο.
